CASE STUDIES

Drinking water treatment plant (Deposit) in Araka

The water supply is the most highly rated public service in the capital of Alava, according to a study carried out by the Urban Services Observatory. Ninety-nine percent of the inhabitants of Vitoria are satisfied with the quality of the water and 87% with its management (absence of cuts, pressure, etc.).

The Araka treatment plant has three supply tanks, with an internal diameter of 61.8 metres and a height of 10 metres. Each one can hold up to 30,000 cubic metres of drinking water.

The project included the demolition of one of the existing tanks, the construction of a new one with a similar capacity on the same site and the construction of a warehouse, a valve room and the complete urbanisation of the area.

The new tank has a capacity of 30,000 m³; the new valve room controls the operation and manoeuvre of the main hydraulic control elements of the regulating tanks of the Araka DWTP.

CHOSEN SYSTEM

With the ACE PU-100 system, the waterproofing of the tank is solved, guaranteeing the watertightness and the storage of drinking water for a long time inside the tank, preventing the entry of contaminating agents that may be harmful to health and also preventing leaks of the deposited water.

This solution provides:

  • Resistance to the emergence of micro-organisms and pathogens such as mould or verdigris.
  • Optimum adherence to the surface.
  • High durability.
  • Minimises maintenance to avoid affecting the drinking water supply, with the inconvenience that this entails.
  • 100% watertight at all times. Preventing both the entry of water from the outside and, of course, the exit of the contained water.
  • High elasticity.
  • Compliance with RD140 regulations.

PROCEDURE

  • First of all, the surface of the substrate was cleaned and prepared by caulking all the pores in the walls and pillars.
  • Subsequently, the joints between the screed and the pillars were treated and, above all, the large expansion joint between the screed and the perimeter wall of more than 200 ml was resolved.
  • Priming of the substrate with the application of PRIMERFLEX PLUS.
  • Projection of ACE PU-100 polyurea waterproofing membrane with an average thickness of 2.5mm.
  • Treatment of singular points (half reeds, drains, corners, grilles and road safety elements).
  • The roof is finished with ACE 373 aliphatic polyurethane, anti-slip and as protection against ultraviolet rays.
