CASE STUDIES

Conquistadores Shopping Center (Badajoz)

It is a Conquerors of Badajoz shopping centre designed by the prestigious architect Rafael de La-Hoz.

The building has a car park on the first floor that serves the users of the centre.

It has the following distribution of floors:

  • Basement -1
  • Ground floor for business premises.
  • First floor and parking deck.
  • Second floor and roof deck.

The composition of the roof located on the first floor, which serves as a car park, is as follows: A slab built with ‘in situ’ concrete on which a zero slope asphalt waterproofing system was installed and then a prefabricated paving stone pavement on a bed of sand. The slopes were made in the final paving layer.

REASONS FOR REHABILITATION:

On an initial visit visual inspection was carried out verifying the following pathologies:

  • Multiple water leaks from the car park floor to the floor immediately below.
  • Degradation of the expansion joints due to fatigue from the natural movements of the structure.
  • Water stagnation between the paving layer and the waterproofing.

CAUSES
The defects indicated in the previous section are due, for the most part, to the construction system used. The asphalt waterproofing is laid with a zero slope, which means that as it is a material that is not suitable for being in contact with water, its properties are lost prematurely.

In this way, the expansion joints are also prone to fatigue more quickly and lose their elasticity as a construction solution.

CHOSEN SYSTEM

With the ACE PU-100 system, the possibilities of filtration are eliminated as it is a totally watertight system and at the same time it can withstand road traffic with any intensity by being installed on the surface, i.e. on the current pavement.

This solution provides:

  • It makes it possible to act on the existing pavement, giving the advantage of reducing the execution time significantly and at the same time containing the costs of the intervention.
  • It allows road traffic directly on the waterproofing layer as it is highly resistant to wear and tear and puncturing.
  • It makes it possible to inspect the coating layer on a daily basis and to intervene immediately if necessary.
  • Prevents water from entering between the paving and the waterproofing layer, eliminating the possibility of stagnant water between layers.

PROCEDURE

  • First of all, the surface of the substrate was cleaned and prepared by shot blasting the entire substrate.
  • Subsequently, the joints between the paving stones that were missing material between the pieces were treated.
  • Priming of the substrate with PRIMERFLEX PLUS.
  • Projection of ACE PU-100 polyurea waterproofing membrane with an average thickness of 3mm.
  • Treatment of expansion joints and singular joints (half-pipe, drains, corners, gratings and road safety elements).
  • Finishing with aliphatic polyurethane anodising system as protection against ultraviolet rays and as road marking.
